On Oct 28, Meta Changes What Happens When Someone Taps Your Ad

Unless you opt out, taps on your running Facebook and Instagram ads may open product info inside Meta's apps instead of going straight to your site.

The short versionMeta has notified advertisers that starting October 28, 2026, it will add product browsing to ads already running on Facebook and Instagram unless they opt out before that date, PPC Land reports. When people tap an ad, they may see product info and personalized suggestions on Facebook or Instagram. Meta says businesses saw 3% more conversions on average in its own test. You can opt out from the notice or turn product browsing on or off in each ad's Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings.

A default is about to flip in your Meta ads. From October 28, a tap on an ad that's already running may keep people inside Facebook or Instagram instead of sending them straight to your website, unless you opt out first.

What happened

Meta has told advertisers that starting October 28, 2026, it will add product browsing to ads already running on Facebook and Instagram unless they opt out before that date, PPC Land reports. Meta's notice reads: "We're turning on product browsing for your existing ads. When people tap your ad, they may see an experience on Facebook or Instagram with product info and personalized suggestions."

The details

How to opt out. The notice says: "Don't want this? Opt out before October 28, 2026 below. You can also turn product browsing on or off anytime in your Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings."

Meta's number. Meta says businesses saw 3% more conversions on average in an experiment run between August 6 and August 21, 2026, across about 117,700 advertisers. It's Meta's own test, and PPC Land notes the figure comes without much detail.

Not much paperwork. As of October 15, Meta hadn't published a Help Center article, changelog entry or newsroom post about the change, according to Ads Uploader. The date comes from the advertiser notice.

Why brands should care

Where a tap lands matters. If people browse products inside Meta's apps, your website analytics, retargeting audiences and landing-page tests may see less traffic, even if total conversions hold up. For some brands that trade-off is fine. For others, especially those who rely on email sign-ups or upsells on their own site, it isn't.

What to do

Our suggestions, not Meta guidance:

  1. Decide before October 28. If you want taps to go to your site, opt out or switch product browsing off in each ad's settings.
  2. Or test it. Leave it on for one campaign, off for another, and compare cost per purchase over a few weeks.
  3. Watch site traffic after the switch. A drop in landing-page visits with steady sales is a sign it's working inside the app.
