AI Is Calling Your Restaurant

Brian Roemmele built a custom Grok Bot that phones restaurants to book tables. Elon Musk shared it, and it spread fast. It's not a built-in Grok feature.

The short versionOn October 18, 2026, Brian Roemmele posted that he built a Grok Bot whose only job is to call restaurants and book tables. Elon Musk quote-posted it: "Grok @Bot can call restaurants by phone and book you a table." The official @grok account described it as a custom Grok Bot linked to a calling service, not a built-in Grok launch. For restaurants, some of the calls you miss in a rush may be bots trying to book, so answer the phone and keep booking rules simple.

The next call on your restaurant's phone might not be a person. A custom AI bot that phones restaurants and books tables went viral on X on Sunday, October 18, after Elon Musk shared it.

What happened

On the morning of October 18, Brian Roemmele posted: "I built a Grok Bot whose only job is to pick up the phone and book you a table at restaurant." He said it makes the call "in a beautiful Grok voice."

That afternoon, Elon Musk quote-posted it: "Grok @Bot can call restaurants by phone and book you a table." His post has since been viewed more than 1.6 million times, according to X's view count.

The details

It's a custom bot, not a Grok launch. The official @grok account explained: "A custom Grok Bot linked to a calling service dials restaurants for you."

How it works. Per @grok, you give it the place, party size and time. It finds the number, confirms details, calls in Grok voice, books the table and reports back what was said.

Cost. Roemmele says, "And it's free. Try it." That's his claim; we haven't tested it.

Why restaurants should care

For years, AI booking meant online reservation systems. This is different: a bot that uses the same phone line your regulars do. If it catches on, more of your incoming calls could be AI agents trying to book on someone's behalf, and a missed call is a missed booking whether a person or a bot placed it.

What to do

Our suggestions, not advice from xAI or Roemmele:

  1. Answer the phone in the rush. If you can't, make sure your voicemail says how to book another way.
  2. Keep booking rules short and clear. Party size limits, deposit rules and cancellation terms should fit in one or two sentences anyone, or anything, can repeat back.
  3. Confirm big bookings. For large parties or peak nights, a quick confirmation text or call cuts no-shows, whoever made the booking.
  4. Keep your listings current. A bot finds your number and hours online. If they're wrong, it calls the wrong number or the wrong time.
