The short versionGoogle's privacy policy effective October 16, 2026 keeps its line about not showing personalized ads based on content from Drive, Gmail or Google Photos, but adds: "unless you choose to make data from these services available to other Google services that support personalized ads." If you connect Gmail or Google Photos to Search for Personal Intelligence, Google's Search Help says summaries, excerpts and inferences from them may also be used to show you ads. Google says advertisers will not have access to your inbox. Connecting is a choice you make in Connected Content Apps.
For years Google has said, in plain words, that it doesn't use your Gmail, Drive or Photos content to personalize ads. That sentence is still in its privacy policy. It just has a new ending.
What happened
Google's privacy policy effective October 1, 2026 said: "We don’t show you personalized ads based on your content from Drive, Gmail, or Photos." The current version, effective October 16, 2026, says: "We don’t show you personalized ads based on your content from Drive, Gmail, or Google Photos, unless you choose to make data from these services available to other Google services that support personalized ads."
The same policy adds: "If you choose to allow certain services to process data from other services, including for features such as Personal Intelligence, the same data may be used to personalize your experience."
The details
The trigger is Personal Intelligence. Google lets you connect certain apps to its Search services, which include Search, AI Mode, Discover, Maps, Shopping and more. According to Google Search Help, you can connect Google Workspace (currently Gmail and Google Calendar) and Google Photos. Drive isn't on that list today, though Google says other Workspace apps are "coming soon."
What Google says happens to the data. The same help page says: "If you connect your content apps to Search Services, Search may reference summaries, excerpts and inferences from these sources to personalize your experience and do things for you. That same info may be used to show you ads, so they are even more helpful for you."
What Google says doesn't happen. "Ads will not be based directly on your Gmail inbox or your Google Photos library," and "advertisers will not have access to your Gmail inbox or Google Photos," per Search Help.
The old FAQ got a note. Google's ads privacy FAQ still says content in Drive, Gmail and Photos "is never used for ads purposes," now followed by an "Update, October 16, 2026" explaining that if users enable the new features, "that same subset of data can also be used to show ads."
Why brands should care
This is opt-in, not a default switch. But plenty of small business owners run their whole business from one Google account: supplier invoices, customer emails, booking confirmations, product photos. If you connected Gmail or Photos to Search to try AI Mode, information drawn from that inbox can now shape the ads you see. It's also a reminder for marketers that ad targeting is moving closer to people's personal context, with assistants as the bridge.
What to do
Our suggestions:
- Check your connections. Google Account > Search Services Personalization > Additional Personal Intelligence > Connected Content Apps.
- Separate business and personal. If you connect apps for AI features, think about which account holds client data.
- Tell your team. Anyone using a shared business Google account should know what connecting an app means.
- Re-read your own promises. If your privacy page says "we never use X for Y," make sure the tools you rely on still match it.
