The short versionOn September 30, Instagram started rolling out the Edits assistant to everyone using its Edits app in the US. It knows your account's follows, views, video retention, likes and shares, combines them with comments and trends, and can explain why one Reel held attention and another didn't. It's free with a daily prompt limit, and Instagram says Meta One subscribers will soon be able to unlock more usage.
Instagram just gave creators an analyst that lives inside their editing app. On September 30, Instagram announced the Edits assistant, an AI assistant built into Edits, its video creation app.
What happened
In a post from Brett Westervelt, who leads the Edits app, Instagram said the assistant is rolling out to everyone using Edits in the US. TechCrunch reports Meta first previewed the tool in June at an invite-only creator event. Instagram hasn't said when it will reach other countries.
The details
According to Instagram, the assistant knows your account's metrics, such as follows, views, video retention, likes and shares, and combines them with your comments, Instagram trends and your audience's interests. Instagram suggests asking it to explain "why one reel held attention and another didn't," what connected with your audience, what's trending and what to make next.
From there, it can suggest video concepts, hooks, captions and scripts based on your own track record. It also recommends trending audio that matches your niche, which you can save straight from the chat.
Instagram shared two creator examples. It says beauty creator @jaleesajaikaran saw her videos perform very well after the assistant recommended mixing a 7-second reel in among her 1-minute videos. Creator @turnipvegan put it this way: "It's like a cheat code for creators."
On price: the assistant is free to use in Edits with a daily prompt limit. Instagram says power users will soon be able to unlock more usage with a Meta One subscription.
Westervelt said Edits worked closely with a group of creators on the tool. As TechCrunch quotes him: "One thing we heard consistently: creators want a tool that handles the analysis, not one that does the creative work for them."
Why brands should care
Most small brands already have Reels data. What they don't have is time to read it. A tool that looks at your own retention and engagement and turns it into a plain answer, like "this one lost people early," lowers the bar for learning from what you post.
The catch is that it's working from your history. It can tell you what has worked for your account, not what your brand should stand for. Strategy and taste are still on you.
What to do
- Download Edits if you're in the US. The assistant is inside the Edits app, not the main Instagram app.
- Start with a comparison. Pick your best and worst recent Reel and ask why one held attention and the other didn't.
- Test one suggestion at a time. Try one hook or format change per week so you can tell what actually moved the numbers.
- Check its reasoning. Compare what it says against your own Insights before changing your whole content plan.
- Watch the prompt limit. Save your questions for the decisions that matter.
